| I will be student teaching first grade in the fall. I am trying to start building my book library as well as other necessities I may need to teach this grade. Any suggestions? What could you not live without? |

| I student taught in first grade and the one thing I couldn't have lived without was my co-op...work with your cooperating teacher and ask their guidence...get your feet wet as soon as possible, be ready to teach, and take over as soon as they will let you...and follow the proceedures that they already have established...good luck...and enjoy the experience. |

| I agree with Level 2 Rookie....your cooperating teacher will be your best resource. Whatever he or she tells you take notes and take heed. I had an excellent student teaching experience. Also, take any "good" advice from the other seasoned teachers. I was lucky, my CT was an old church member of mine and we taught Sunday School together, which made for an excellent working relationship. My first day of student teaching, I already knew all the students by name and their assigned seats. If possible go by the school, meet the principal, secretary, cooperating teacher and most importantly, the students. I loved my class...... |

I am a first year teacher, so I completely understand how hard it is to start stocking up on the things you'll need! I'd definitely start with books - go to Goodwill (they have books from 50 cents to a few bucks, but on certain days you can get 50% off). Also try your library - they'll often have a book sale. I like to just stock up on any storage container that I can find, I can usually find a place for it. Garage sales and Good Will are my best friends! |
